B.K.S. Iyengar

The Iyengar Yoga Institute Amsterdam offers an extensive and complete three-year B. K. S. Iyengar Yoga Teacher Training Program documented in the Teachers Training Program Document (see under under downloads for the full document).

This is a three year long yoga course, focused on the self-practicing of yoga asanas and pranayamas , as well as training students to teach yoga. The three years of B.K.S. Iyengar-recognized ‘Introductory Certificate I and II’ culminate in an examination based on a list of 60 asanas and some pranayamas (see Yoga Dipika of Light on Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar). In addition there will be an assessment of the student’s teaching ability in a class given by the student to a small group of beginners for thirty minutes. Teaching will be exclusively based on the method of B.K.S. Iyengar. The internationally recognized diploma makes it possible to teach in Iyengar Yoga anywhere in the world.

Content of the Yoga Lessons

  • Learning by doing:
The self-practise of yoga, is the cornerstone of the training. During the lessons, insight will be acquired in a direct and active way in the technique of asana practice. By perfecting the technique, superfluous physical tension disappears and the body becomes fitter and more energetic. During yoga practice, no distinction should be made between the physical and the mental. The body is awareness, and this explains the strong effect of the Iyengar approach regarding relaxation. By means of this energetic style of practice, circulation improves and the body becomes stronger and healthier.
  • Yoga teaching:
By helping others, the student’s own limitations will be surpassed.

As yoga practice is essentially internally reflective, teaching others is of crucial importance in advancing ones own yoga practice. In a teaching situation, a teacher is forced to think of many different solutions, and so ones own yoga practice gains from expanded thinking and there is less likelihood of being stuck in old patterns. Students will teach each other under the guidance and correction of the course trainer.

Theory of Pose and Movement

The student acquires a very practically minded understanding of living anatomy, which gives a good insight into the building and function of the locomotion-apparatus. With the aid of a course-manual it will be completely clear to the student what is to be expected of him/her. Besides the theoretical part, the training will consist of study-assignments, and anatomy which enhance understanding of the asanas. At the end of the study-year there is a test, in which a sufficient mark must be gained in order to pass the final exam.

Yoga philosophy

The philosophy courses deal mainly with yogic philosophy, however this is hard to understand without having an insight into ‘Indian thinking’. In the second and third year, attention will be focused on the Yoga sutras by Patanjali, as well as subsequent developments in yoga and Vedanta. At the end of each study-year there is a test, in which a sufficient mark must be gained in order to successfully complete the course.

Requirements for Admittance

One has to be well motivated and possess enough relevant yoga experience; preferably according to the Iyengar yoga method. Training consists of active yoga lessons that demand great dedication from the student. In an introductory conversation and a yoga-lesson, it will be assessed whether the future student is ‘ripe’ to participate in the training. The training-staff reserves the right to reject candidates, without disclosing the reasons. Appointments for an introductory conversation can be made with Clé Souren, 020-6276523.

Examination Requirements

The training-staff and a committee from the Iyengar Yoga Society Netherlands have to agree unanimously about the study-achievements of the examined candidate in order for him/her to obtain the Iyengar Yoga Introductory Certificate I and II. The examination committee will assess the candidates in good conscience, but reserves the right to reject candidates, without disclosing the reasons.
